Rise Village International is a pro bono association based in Switzerland that aims to improve the lives of those in underserved communities by providing sustainable access to education.
The system leverages the ‘internet in a box’ concept, adapted for locations where the internet and power are either not available or unreliable and enhanced with a teaching system for easy access to curated, vetted educational libraries. The community issues solved go beyond the classroom to impart vital health, food and sanitation knowledge from authoritative sources.
Unlike many city-centred initiatives, Rise Village has proven a radical approach that starts from the outside, starting in under-served communities and moving to central educational hubs as it gains momentum. This enables impact assessments to be conducted faster and more efficiently, whilst community benefits are proven in physically demanding, remote environments.
Cosmic Fishing
Searching for post-antibiotic solutions in high dimensional space
In the post-antibiotic era the risk of untreatable infections continues to increase. A potential solution is antimicrobials but finding these strings of amino acids is challenging as there are so many unique variations – approximately one order of magnitude larger than the number of stars in the universe!
Cosmic fishing is a research project that applies data science, nanotechnology and experimental biology to ‘go fishing’ in this massive sequence space to find useful antimicrobial peptides. Taking a unique randomised approach, the search bypasses the conventional evolutionary process used today.
This unique approach to the design, evaluation, and application of antimicrobial peptides is designed to unlock an exciting set of much-needed potential solutions in the struggle to combat infection in the post-antibiotic era.
